Good citizenship means taking great care to understand and mitigate our impact on the environment and the communities in which we work. As the world’s largest user of cocoa, we can make a big difference in the lives of millions.
Sustainability
We’ve been in the chocolate business for nearly 100 years, but that doesn’t mean we’re resting easy. We know that improving the sustainability of our practices is a great investment in our shared future. To that end, Mars is proud to be the first global chocolate company to commit to fundamentally changing the way sustainable cocoa farming is practiced. By 2020, we aim to certify our entire cocoa supply as being produced in a sustainable manner.
The Cocoa Genome
The United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, Mars, and IBM are working together to sequence and analyze the entire cocoa genome. The collaboration will enable farmers to plant better quality cocoa and, more importantly, help create healthier, stronger cocoa crops with higher yields, pest and disease resistance, and increased water and nutrient use efficiency.
Rainforest Alliance Certification
By 2020, Mars will source 100,000 tonnes of cocoa each year that complies with strict standards that protect the environment, workers, local communities and wildlife.
iMPACT Program
Through the Mars Partnership for African Cocoa Communities of Tomorrow (iMPACT) program, Mars is working to ensure a better future for the cocoa farmers of the world.
Brazil Science Center
The Mars Center for Cocoa Science in Bahia, Brazil, works on a number of cocoa-related issues with federal, local and NGO communities. The center partners with local farmers and the scientific community to improve cocoa production practices and, well, make cocoa better.
TerraCycle Partnership
Through a partnership with TerraCycle, Mars is recycling some of our used and surplus packaging into products such as laptop bags and cell phone holders, giving these materials new life, and keeping them out of landfills.
